Relocating to Bangalore: The First 30 Days

This guide is the sequence, not the city tour. It is written for someone arriving in Bengaluru for a job, a project or a posting, and for the HR or admin lead who is moving them. What should you do in your first 30 days in Bangalore?

Do the tasks in the order they unlock each other. The table assumes you arrive without a flat. If your employer has already housed you, skip to the fourth row.

Where should you stay while you look for a flat in Bangalore?

Somewhere furnished that does not need a lease: a hotel, a PG or a serviced apartment. Signing a lease on a flat you have not seen, from another city, is the mistake to avoid. Karnataka sets no statutory cap on security deposits, and Bengaluru landlords commonly ask for several months' rent up front. Which of the three suits you depends mostly on how long the search takes and whether you want a kitchen. A hotel is simplest for a week. A PG is cheapest but shared. A serviced apartment has no deposit and no lease, because occupying one is a licence rather than a tenancy, and it has a kitchen. One thing to ask before you book anywhere: will the place give you a document with your name and its address on it? UIDAI accepts a leave and licence agreement as proof of address, so a longer furnished stay with a written agreement in your name can carry your first address change while you look for a flat. A hotel invoice is not on UIDAI's list.

Which area of Bangalore should you look in?

Start from your office, not from the neighbourhood's reputation. Bengaluru's large employers are spread across several distinct clusters: the Outer Ring Road corridor in the east and south-east, Whitefield further east, Electronic City in the south, and the central business district. A short distance across the city can still mean a long commute, so choose the cluster first and the flat second.

If your office is on the Outer Ring Road, HSR Layout is one of the best-placed residential areas for it. A correction worth knowing before you sign anything: HSR Layout's own metro station is on the Blue Line, which is still under construction. The Yellow Line, which opened on 10 August 2025, does not stop in HSR Layout; its nearest station is Central Silk Board. Our metro page lists every published opening date with its source.

Which relocation paperwork needs a Bangalore address, and which does not?

Your licence, your phone number and your travel cards work from day one; your Aadhaar, voter registration, vehicle papers and gas connection all need a Bengaluru address first.

Can you use an 11-month rental agreement as address proof for Aadhaar?

Yes. UIDAI's list of acceptable documents for updating Aadhaar, in the version dated May 2026, accepts a "registered or unregistered rent, lease agreement or leave and licence agreement" as proof of address. That matters in Bengaluru, where the standard rental agreement runs for 11 months precisely so that it does not have to be registered.

Three conditions catch people out:

• It must be in your name. UIDAI requires documents submitted for an update to be issued in the name of the person updating. If the agreement names only your flatmate, or only your employer, it will not work for you.
• A bill in the landlord's name does not help. UIDAI also accepts electricity, water, gas, landline, broadband and post-paid mobile bills, but only if they are no older than three months, and the same own-name rule applies.
• Changing your address is not free. A change of address is a demographic update, charged at ₹75 on its own, or free when done together with a biometric update. The "free Aadhaar update" you may have read about is a different service. It lets you re-submit proof for the address already on record through the myAadhaar portal, free until 14 June 2027, and it does not move you to a new address.

For a child moving with you, UIDAI allows a Head of Family based address update, in which a parent or legal guardian acts as Head of Family and the child's address is taken from theirs. So update your own Aadhaar first.

How do you move your voter registration to Bangalore?

With Form 8, filed on the Election Commission's portal at voters.eci.gov.in, after your Aadhaar shows your Bengaluru address. Form 8 covers shifting residence, and the application goes to the Electoral Registration Officer of the constituency your new address is in.

The order matters because of the form's address-proof list. For a tenant, Form 8 lists a registered rent lease deed, which most 11-month Bengaluru agreements are not. The same list includes an Aadhaar card. The guidelines also let you use a document in the name of a parent or spouse, or write in another document, but the listed ones, in the form's own words, "ensure speedy delivery of services". So the easy route is Aadhaar first, updated with your rental agreement, and Form 8 second.

Do you need a Karnataka driving licence after moving to Bangalore?

No. Section 13 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 says that a learner's licence or driving licence issued under the Act "shall be effective throughout India". A licence from any state is valid in Karnataka without being transferred.

Changing the address on it is optional, but useful if your licence is one of the documents you rely on as ID. It is done through the Sarathi portal at sarathi.parivahan.gov.in. Fees vary with the service and whether a new card is printed, so check the amount the portal shows rather than a figure quoted online.

What if you bring a car or bike from another state?

Two central rules apply, and one state rule we do not quote.

• Report the new address within 30 days. Section 49 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 requires a vehicle's owner who stops living at the address on the registration certificate to report the new address within thirty days. If the new address falls under a different registering authority, the report goes to that authority. It does not apply to a temporary absence not intended to exceed six months.
• Re-register after twelve months. Under section 47, a vehicle registered in one state that is kept in another for more than twelve months must be assigned a new registration mark by the registering authority there. The application goes with a no objection certificate from the original registering authority, or proof that you applied for one, and, if the vehicle is on a loan or lease, a no objection certificate from the financier too.
• Karnataka road tax is a separate question. It is set by the Karnataka Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1957, which was amended in 2023 and again in 2025. Online guides disagree about when a vehicle registered elsewhere becomes liable and how much it owes, so we do not publish a figure. Ask the Karnataka Transport Department or your local RTO before you bring a vehicle for a long stay, and ask the state you are leaving about a refund of any road tax you paid there.

How do you get around Bangalore before you have a local address?

Namma Metro and BMTC buses both work without a Bengaluru address. For the metro, buy QR tickets in BMRCL's Namma Metro app, or buy a smart card at a station counter. A smart card or an NCMC card gets a fare discount, and the current fares, card discounts and BMTC pass prices are in our cost-of-living guide. Card prices and deposits are quoted inconsistently online, so we leave them to the station counter. For buses, the Tummoc app sells BMTC passes and asks for a government ID number and a selfie.

If you are staying in HSR Layout, the nearest working metro station today is Central Silk Board on the Yellow Line, 1.2 to 3.1 km in a straight line from the seven sector centres. For most offices on the Outer Ring Road, plan on travelling by road until HSR Layout's Blue Line station opens.

What happens to your cooking gas connection when you move?

A move to a new city means closing the old connection and opening one with a distributor that serves your new address. The oil companies' process is to surrender the cylinder and regulator at your current distributor, which gives you a Termination Voucher, and to take that voucher to a distributor in Bengaluru, which issues a new Subscription Voucher with a new consumer number. The details differ between Indane, HP Gas and Bharatgas, so ask your current distributor before you leave.

Do it only once you have a flat. Until then there is nothing to connect it to. If you are in a furnished place with a kitchen, ask whether cooking gas is included.

Common questions about relocating to Bangalore

Book a furnished place for your first few weeks before you travel, and look for a flat once you are in the city. Most of the other relocation tasks, including updating your Aadhaar address, moving your voter registration and re-registering a vehicle, need proof of a Bengaluru address, and for most people that proof is the rental agreement on the flat.
